Pool leak detection costs vary because companies do not all price or perform their services the same way.
Some companies charge a fixed price for a particular service, such as an underwater inspection, electronic liner scan, or plumbing pressure test. Others offer service packages or charge separately for different stages of testing, pinpointing, and repair.
These are all legitimate pricing structures. The important thing is understanding what is included before comparing prices.
The short answer: Pool leak detection cost depends on how the company structures its service and how much testing the pool requires. Atlantic Pool Leak Detection charges for diagnostic time rather than separately charging for each testing method. Nearly all typical residential appointments are completed within the initial two-hour service period.
Professional pool leak detection services in New Jersey typically range from $500 to $1,000, depending heavily on the scope of testing and what is included. Lower-priced services are usually limited to a visual inspection or another specific testing method. Costs can move toward the higher end when a company thoroughly tests both the pool and underground plumbing or charges separately for testing and pinpointing. Repairs may be included in some circumstances and priced separately in others. Homeowners should always compare the full scope of service rather than relying solely on the price.
What Affects Pool Leak-Detection Cost?
A pool can lose water from a liner, skimmer, light, fitting, attached spa, water feature, or underground plumbing line. Some leaks are found quickly, while others require several testing methods.
The amount of work may depend on:

A basic residential pool with a few plumbing lines requires a different process than a large pool and spa with multiple pumps, numerous lines, and several water features.
How Different Pricing Approaches Can Affect the Final Cost
A lower starting price does not always mean a lower final cost. If the initial service covers only one part of the pool and the leak is somewhere else, additional testing may be needed.

How Atlantic Pool Leak Detection Charges
Atlantic Pool Leak Detection charges according to the diagnostic time required. We do not require customers to choose between pool testing and plumbing testing before we arrive.
Most customers know their pool is losing water but do not know whether the problem is in the pool itself or its underground plumbing. Our approach allows us to follow the evidence and use the appropriate testing methods.
Depending on what we find, the service may include:
- Individual plumbing-line pressure testing
- Electronic listening and underground pinpointing
- Underwater inspection and dye testing
- Electronic scanning of vinyl liners
- Testing around skimmers, lights, drains, fittings, steps, and jets
- Evaluation of attached spas and water features
- Minor underwater sealing or patching when appropriate
The customer is paying for our professional time, years of experience, and specialized equipment, not a separate fee for each testing method used during the diagnostic period.
Could Additional Time Increase the Cost?
Yes. A particularly large or complicated pool may require additional diagnostic time.
However, nearly all of our residential leak detection appointments are completed within the initial two-hour service period. When an appointment runs slightly beyond that period, we generally do not add another hourly charge.
Additional time is more likely when a pool has numerous plumbing lines, multiple water features, unusually complicated circulation systems, difficult access, or evidence of more than one leak.
Are Repairs Included?
Leak detection and repair are not always the same service.
Certain underwater repairs, such as vinyl liner patches or sealing around fittings or lights, can typically be completed during the same appointment without a separate repair charge.
Larger repairs, such as excavating to repair or replace a broken pipe, opening concrete, or replacing a skimmer, require a different scope of work.
This can also vary by company. Some companies perform only leak detection, while others provide selected repairs or charge separately for testing, pinpointing, and repair.
Questions to Ask Before Comparing Prices
Before scheduling, ask:
- Will the company evaluate both the pool structure and the underground plumbing if necessary?
- Are plumbing lines tested individually?
- Can the company electronically pinpoint an underground break?
- Is electronic liner scanning available, or is the inspection visual only?
- Are attached spas and water features included in the quoted service, or do they cost extra?
- Can minor repairs be completed during the appointment?
- Would larger repairs be quoted separately?
- Under what circumstances could the price increase?
- If the company performs repairs, does it have an active New Jersey Home Improvement Contractor Business registration that can be verified?
- Does the company carry commercial general liability insurance and, if it has employees, workers’ compensation insurance?
New Jersey requires businesses that sell or perform residential home-improvement work, including swimming pool repairs, to maintain an active Home Improvement Contractor Business registration unless they are legally exempt. Registration requires proof of at least $500,000 in commercial general liability insurance. Companies with employees are also required to maintain workers’ compensation coverage. Homeowners can verify a contractor’s registration through the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
The proper comparison is not simply one company’s starting price against another’s. It is what the company is equipped to test and what you should expect to know when the service is finished.
