Note: Cannot Do This Test When It Rains
Follow these steps exactly as noted below:
- Get the pool to its normal water level (middle of the skimmer – not any higher).
- Take an empty 5-gallon bucket and fill it 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up with water from the pool.
- Use a piece of duct tape to mark the water level on the inside of the bucket.
- Place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool (at least 2/3 to 3/4 of the bucket needs to be submerged in water).
- Use a piece of duct tape on the skimmer (inside the pool) to mark the water level of the pool water.
- Let everything sit for 24 hrs. (do not turn the pool on, use the pool or add water to it).
- After 24 hrs., compare the water loss inside the bucket to the water loss inside the pool (using the tape marks as a reference).
The bucket can only lose water to evaporation. The pool can lose water to evaporation and to a leak. if the loss is the same inside the bucket and the pool, then your pool is evaporating. If it appears that the water loss in the pool is greater than the water loss inside the bucket, then your pool is leaking.
If you suspect a leak, take pictures of the tape marks on the inside of the bucket and by the skimmer, and keep them as a reference for when we come out to perform your leak detection.
